🌿 The most important houseplant care tips
✅ 7 basics for healthy, strong houseplants
1️⃣ Climate & humidity
💧 Spray the leaves with water weekly – this strengthens the immune system and encourages new growth.
🌫️ Higher humidity helps against dry indoor air, especially in winter, and keeps pests away.
🔥 Heating air dries out houseplants – so make sure there is enough humidity!
2️⃣ Light & sun
☀️ Houseplants need light! More light means more energy and better growth.
🪟 Watch out for darkened windows: Too little light hinders photosynthesis.
🌞 Avoid direct midday sun, as it can burn the leaves.
📖 Tip: You can find your plant's individual light requirements on our website.
3️⃣ Nutrients & fertilising
🌱 From March to October fertilise once a month – at half the dose (manufacturers' recommendations are often too high).
❄️ Do not fertilise from November to March! During this period nutrients are not used optimally, which leads to over-salination in the root zone.
🚰 In winter, water with plain water only.
4️⃣ Temperature & heat sources
🔥 Be careful with radiators: Avoid direct hot air – keep a minimum distance or move the plant to a cooler spot.
🌡️ Optimal winter temperature: 18–20 °C – this reduces energy loss and leaf drop.
🏡 Underfloor heating? Raise plant pots off the floor with wooden blocks or plant caddies to avoid heat build-up.
5️⃣ Pruning & care
🧼 Remove dust and dirt: Wipe the leaves regularly with a damp cloth.
✂️ Remove dry leaves & shootsto keep the plant healthy.
🌿 Shape by pruningwhen plants become too tall or too wide.
6️⃣ Substrates & correct watering
🚱 Never keep the substrate permanently wet! Waterlogging leads to root rot.
🛑 Most common cause of death: overwatering! Always let the substrate dry out slightly or completely before watering again.
☝️ Finger test: Push your finger into the substrate – if it is still moist, don't water!
🌵 Drought-loving plants (e.g. cacti, succulents, yucca, ponytail palm) only water every 10–14 days and hardly fertilise.
7️⃣ Pests & home remedies to control them
🐞 First step: Give the plant a thorough shower – this solves 90% of pest problems.
🧴 Effective home remedies against pests:
- Remove aphids, mealybugs & scale insects by hand (e.g. with a cloth & a little alcohol).
- Control spider mites & thrips with a water, soap and rapeseed oil mixture :
🔹 Mix 400 ml water + 100 ml rapeseed oil + a little soap
🔹 Spray the upper and undersides of the leaves
🔹 3 treatments within 7 daysto suffocate the pests
