🌱 Getting your houseplants safely through the winter

How do you get your houseplants through the winter?

Winter can be a challenging time for houseplants. Here are some important tips to make sure your plants stay healthy and vigorous during the cold season too.

Light supply

Principle: Light = energy / energy = growth.
In autumn and winter, when the sun is lower in the sky, your houseplants receive less light. This directly affects their ability to sustain their leaves through photosynthesis. When the amount of light decreases but room temperatures stay high because of the heating, the plants lack the energy they need to keep their leaves. As a result, many plants shed some of their leaves – a natural process to compensate for the lack of light.

High temperatures and their effects

High temperature = high biochemical activity.
The energy required at high temperatures is generated from light energy. To strike a balance, temperature and light should always be considered together. When light decreases, the temperature should be lowered as well. If that is not possible, the availability of light can be extended artificially, for example with LED grow lights. Extending the day by 5 hours, e.g. from 17:00 to 22:00, can help the plants build up additional energy and keep their leaves.

Winter care tips

  • Change of location: In winter, place your plants as close to the window as possible. Never darken the windows during the day, but watch out for direct midday sun to avoid sunburn.
  • Room temperature: Reduce the temperature to 18-20 degrees Celsius.
  • Keep away from radiators: Keep plants away from radiators to avoid direct exposure to heat.
  • Underfloor heating: Make sure the plant pot is not in direct contact with the floor. Use plant caddies or wooden blocks.
  • Additional artificial lighting: Use artificial lighting to improve the light supply.
  • Humidifier: Use a humidifier to counteract the dry heated air and increase humidity.

With these tips, you can make sure your houseplants stay healthy and thrive during the winter months too!
