History of the orchid cactus Aporocactus 'Melany'

The Aporocactus 'Melany', also known as orchid cactus or rat-tail cactus, is a cultivated form of Aporocactus, which originally comes from Mexico. The 'Melany' variety impresses with its long, pendulous, slightly hairy stems and stunning pink flowers. As an exotic yet easy-care houseplant , it is particularly popular in hanging baskets.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright position with plenty of indirect light; also tolerates some direct sun.

  • Temperature: Ideally 18–27 °C; not below 10 °C.

  • Humidity: Average to slightly increased, but well adapted to dry indoor air.

  • Substrate: Cactus soil or a well-draining mix with sand and perlite.

  • Watering: Water moderately; let the substrate dry out well between waterings.

  • Feeding: Every 4 weeks from March to September with cactus fertiliser.

  • Special features: This houseplant flowers spectacularly in spring or summer in good conditions.

Overwintering tips:

In winter, keep cooler (around 10–15 °C) and water very sparingly. Aporocactus 'Melany' is a great choice for lovers of trailing houseplants with particularly enchanting flowers.
