The Asplenium dimorphum Parvati is a modern cultivar of the bird's nest fern and originally descends from fern species native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Oceania and Southeast Asia. In its natural environment it often grows as an epiphyte on trees or rocks in warm, humid forests. Its finely divided, rich green fronds give it a particularly elegant and delicate appearance. Thanks to its compact growth, it is a popular houseplant for homes and offices.
Care in hydroculture
- Light: Bright to partially shaded spot with indirect light. Direct midday sun should be avoided.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C is optimal. Temperatures below 15 °C should be avoided.
- Humidity: High. Increased humidity promotes healthy growth and prevents the fronds from drying out.
- Substrate: Hydroculture with expanded clay and a matching nursery pot including a water level indicator.
- Watering: Only top up with water when the water level indicator shows Minimum . Then fill up to the optimum mark . A permanently too high water level should be avoided.
- Feeding: During the growing season, feed every 4 weeks with a special hydroculture fertiliser at a low dose.
- Special features: The delicate fronds should not be touched unnecessarily. The fern is sensitive to dry heating air, draughts and sharp temperature fluctuations.
Overwintering tips
In winter, the Asplenium dimorphum Parvati needs less water and fertiliser. A bright spot at temperatures between 18 and 22 °C is ideal. The water level should be checked regularly, as water consumption is lower during the rest period. High humidity helps keep the fronds healthy and fresh.
