Calathea rufibarba, also known as velvet calathea or furry feather calathea, originally comes from the tropical regions of South America, especially Brazil. The plant belongs to the Marantaceae family and is known for its long, wavy leaves, which have a characteristic reddish colouring on the underside.
Care tips for Calathea rufibarba in hydroculture:
Choice of substrate:
A special hydroculture substrate such as expanded clay should be used to ensure good aeration of the roots. Expanded clay has the advantage of storing water while keeping the roots well aerated.
Water level:
The water level in the hydroculture container should be kept constant, but waterlogging should be avoided. A water level indicator can help ensure that the plant always has enough, but not too much, water.
Nutrients:
It is recommended to feed the plant regularly with a special hydroculture fertiliser containing all the necessary macro- and micronutrients. During the growing season, it can be fed every two weeks.
Light requirements:
Calathea rufibarba prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves. A spot near a north- or east-facing window is ideal.
Temperature and humidity:
This plant does best at temperatures between 18°C and 24°C and with high humidity. A spot in the bathroom or the use of a humidifier can be beneficial.
Cleaning the leaves:
The leaves should be cleaned of dust regularly to optimise photosynthesis. It is recommended to wipe them with a damp cloth.
Monitoring for pests:
Pests such as spider mites can also appear in hydroculture. It is advisable to check the plant regularly and, if necessary, treat it with biological pest control products.
Repotting:
In hydroculture, plants rarely need repotting. However, make sure that the root system does not grow too much and that the expanded clay stays clean to prevent mould.
