Codiaeum variegatum, commonly known as croton, is a plant from the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). It originally comes from South-East Asia, in particular the islands of Indonesia and Malaysia and the western Pacific islands. The 'Mrs Iceton' croton is a particularly striking variety that impresses with its colourful leaves in various shades of yellow, red, pink and green. Growing the 'Mrs Iceton' croton in hydroculture is an efficient way to keep the plant healthy and strong.
Care tips for Codiaeum Mrs Iceton in hydroculture:
Light
A bright spot with plenty of indirect light is ideal. Too little light leads to pale leaf colouring, while direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.
Temperature
The ideal temperature is between 18 and 24 °C. Colder conditions and draughts should be avoided, as they easily upset the croton.
Water
The water level in the hydroculture container should be checked regularly. A medium reading on the indicator is optimal. The water should be changed roughly every two to four weeks to prevent possible root rot.
Nutrients
During the growing season, regular feeding with a hydroculture fertiliser makes sense. Roughly every four weeks is enough to meet its need for macro- and micronutrients.
Humidity
Crotons prefer high humidity. If the indoor air is dry, misting the leaves regularly or using a humidifier can help.
Substrate
Expanded clay or another inorganic hydroculture medium is a suitable substrate. It gives the roots support and ensures good aeration.
Root care
The roots should be checked regularly. Rotten or damaged parts of the roots can be removed with clean scissors if necessary.
