History of the croton (Codiaeum variegatum 'Mrs. Iceton')
The croton (Codiaeum variegatum 'Mrs. Iceton') comes from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Oceania. It is particularly prized for its vibrant leaves, which shimmer in shades of yellow, orange and red. As a houseplant, it is a real eye-catcher, but it needs constant conditions to display its full splendour of colour. In hydroculture, it is easier to care for than in soil, as the roots are evenly supplied with water and nutrients.
Care as a hydroculture plant:
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; direct sun enhances the leaf colouring.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; avoid below 15 °C.
- Humidity: Moderate to high; mist occasionally.
- Substrate: No soil substrate needed – use expanded clay or another hydroculture substrate instead.
- Watering: Use the water level indicator; a medium level is optimal. Avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks with hydroculture fertiliser at a low concentration.
- Special features: This houseplant prefers constant conditions – avoid changes of position, as this can cause leaf drop.
Overwintering tips:
Fertilise less in winter and keep the water level low. The croton 'Mrs. Iceton' is a colourful hydroculture plant that delights with its exotic appearance and is perfectly suited to indoor cultivation.
