Accessories:
The croton Codiaeum variegatum Mammi fascinates with its narrow, twisted leaves in vibrant shades of green, yellow, orange and red. Its intense colouring makes it a particularly decorative houseplant that can be grown cleanly and easily in hydroculture. With sufficient light, its strong colours develop particularly beautifully, adding an exotic and colourful accent to any room.
Care in hydroculture:
Light:
Very bright position without intense midday sun. Plenty of light supports strong leaf colouring. With too little light, the colours can fade.
Temperature:
Ideally 18–26 °C. Temperatures below 16 °C should be avoided if possible.
Humidity:
Prefers higher humidity but adapts to normal room air. Regular misting can help, especially during the heating season.
Water & nutrients:
Check the water level in the hydro pot regularly. Only top up with water once it has dropped to the appropriate minimum level, and avoid waterlogging. During the growing season, add hydroculture fertiliser to the water every 2–3 weeks. Fertilise correspondingly less in winter.
Special features:
With its twisted, colourful leaves and bushy growth, the croton 'Mammi' is a real eye-catcher. It is sensitive to frequent changes of position and temperature fluctuations and may respond by dropping leaves. Ideal for modern living spaces, offices or entrance areas – easy to care for, long-lived and exotic.
Important for pet owners:
Croton is toxic to cats and dogs. Its milky sap can irritate skin and mucous membranes on contact and cause health problems if eaten.
