Dracaena fragrans Compacta, also known as the compact dragon tree, is a popular houseplant that originates from the tropical regions of Africa. The compact variety is characterised by its bushy growth habit and its distinctive dark green, glossy leaves arranged in dense tufts. Thanks to its attractive appearance and comparatively uncomplicated care, Dracaena fragrans Compacta is particularly well suited to hydroculture.
Care tips for Dracaena fragrans Compacta in hydroculture:
Light conditions:
The plant should be placed in a spot with indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the leaves.
Hydroculture substrate:
Choose a well-draining, airy hydroculture substrate. This promotes optimal root development and prevents waterlogging.
Watering:
The plant should be watered regularly, but without overwatering. The substrate should always be slightly moist but not soaked.
Humidity:
As Dracaena fragrans Compacta comes from tropical regions, it prefers higher humidity. The leaves should be misted regularly, or a bowl of water can be placed near the plant.
Feeding:
During the growing season in spring and summer, a liquid fertiliser for hydroculture should be used every 4-6 weeks. During the winter rest period, feeding should be reduced or stopped altogether.
Temperature:
The ideal temperature is between 18-24°C. Sharp temperature fluctuations and draughts should be avoided.
Repotting:
Every few years the plant should be repotted into a larger container with fresh hydroculture substrate to make room for root growth.
Pruning:
Dead or yellow leaves should be removed regularly to promote the plant's health. If needed, the plant can also be pruned into the desired shape.
Pest control:
The plant should be checked regularly for pests such as spider mites or aphids. If necessary, suitable control measures should be taken.
