Dracaena fragrans "Janet Craig" is a popular houseplant that originates from West Africa. It belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) and is known for its elegant, dark green leaves and its adaptability to different environments. The "Janet Craig" variety was first bred in the United States in the 1970s and named after an interior landscape designer. In hydroculture, the plant often looks more vigorous and develops stronger roots.
Care tips for Dracaena fragrans "Janet Craig" in hydroculture:
Location:
The plant should be placed in a well-lit spot, but without direct sunlight. A bright window without intense midday sun is ideal.
Water requirements:
It is important that the roots are always in water. Keep the water level constant by topping up water regularly to ensure an optimal supply of nutrients.
Nutrients:
Use a high-quality hydroculture nutrient mix and follow the manufacturer's dosage instructions. A special hydroculture fertiliser can be added every few months to keep the plant adequately supplied.
Humidity:
The plant prefers higher humidity. Make sure its surroundings are not too dry, especially in winter, when heating can dry out the air.
Temperature:
Dracaena fragrans "Janet Craig" does best at normal room temperatures. Sudden changes in temperature and cold draughts should be avoided.
Care:
Regularly removing dust from the leaves promotes the plant's health by keeping the pores clear and optimising photosynthesis. If necessary, the leaves can be wiped with a damp cloth.
Repotting:
The plant should be repotted every few years to remove spent substrate and make room for new growth. When repotting, use a hydroculture substrate and take care not to damage the roots.
