History of the kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) as a hydroculture plant
The kentia palm (Howea forsteriana) comes from Lord Howe Island in Australia and is one of the most popular houseplants. It was already prized in Europe in the 19th century as an elegant palm species. Its robust nature makes it ideal for cultivation as a hydroculture plant, as hydroculture supplies it evenly with nutrients and water.
Care as a hydroculture plant:
- Light: Bright to partially shaded spot, no direct midday sun.
- Temperature: 18–25 °C is ideal; do not keep below 10 °C.
- Humidity: Moderate to high humidity, mist occasionally.
- Water level: Constantly low water level in the hydroculture pot; avoid waterlogging.
- Nutrient supply: Feed every 2–4 weeks with hydroculture fertiliser.
- Special features: This houseplant grows slowly but adapts well to hydroculture and needs little care.
Overwintering tips:
Give less nutrient solution in winter and do not let temperatures fall below 10 °C. As a hydroculture plant, the kentia palm is a long-lived, easy-care houseplant whose tropical charm creates a pleasant indoor climate.
