History of the Lipstick Plant Aeschynanthus lobbianus
The Aeschynanthus lobbianus, better known as the lipstick plant, comes from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. There it grows as an epiphyte on trees, where its roots are supplied by the humid air and rain. It is characterised by its glossy green, slightly fleshy leaves and its striking red, tubular flowers, which resemble a lipstick twisted out of its case. With its trailing growth, it is ideal for hanging baskets, shelves or raised planters and brings tropical flair to any living space.
Care in hydroculture
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light. Morning or evening sun is well tolerated; direct midday sun should be avoided.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C. Temperatures below 15 °C should be avoided.
- Humidity: High. Regular misting or a humid location promotes healthy growth and abundant flowering.
- Substrate: Hydroculture with expanded clay and a matching nursery pot including a water level indicator.
- Watering: Only top up with water when the water level indicator shows Minimum . Then fill up to the optimum mark . A permanently high water level should be avoided.
- Feeding: During the growing and flowering season, feed every 2–4 weeks with a special hydroculture fertiliser. In winter, use fertiliser sparingly.
- Special features: The lipstick plant prefers a consistent location without draughts or sharp temperature fluctuations. In good conditions, it flowers for several months and regularly produces new shoots.
Overwintering tips
During the winter months, reduce watering and keep the plant in a bright spot at temperatures between 16 and 20 °C. The water level should be checked regularly, as water consumption is lower during this time. Slightly higher humidity also supports the plant in winter.
