History of the Monstera deliciosa as a hydroculture plant:
Monstera deliciosa, also known as the Swiss cheese plant, comes from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. It is one of the most popular houseplants, known for its imposing, deeply lobed leaves. While it traditionally grows in soil, it is also well suited to hydroculture, as its strong roots can adapt to different growing conditions.
Care as a hydroculture plant:
- Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal, but it also tolerates partial shade.
- Temperature: 18–27 °C is ideal; below 15 °C growth may stagnate.
- Humidity: Prefers higher humidity; occasional misting is beneficial.
- Water: The water level should be low to medium to prevent root rot.
- Nutrients: Use special hydroculture fertiliser every 4 weeks to promote healthy growth.
- Special features: Dust the leaves regularly to support photosynthesis. A moss pole or climbing support can help keep the plant stable.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, fertilise less and keep the water level low. Monstera needs enough light even in the cold season, so a bright position is important. Temperatures should not fall below 15 °C.
