History of the parlour palm (Chamaedorea elegans) as a hydroculture plant
The parlour palm (Chamaedorea elegans) comes from the tropical rainforests of Central America, especially Mexico and Guatemala. It is one of the most popular indoor palms, as it thrives well even in living spaces with less light. It has been popular in Europe as an elegant, compact palm since the 19th century. Its robustness and adaptability make it ideal for growing in hydroculture, where it is evenly supplied with water and nutrients.
Care as a hydroculture plant
-
Light: Bright to partially shaded spot; also tolerates less light; avoid direct sun.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–24 °C; do not keep below 12 °C.
-
Humidity: Moderate, but benefits from occasional misting.
-
Water level: Keep the water level in the hydroculture pot constantly low; avoid waterlogging.
-
Nutrient supply: Feed every 2–4 weeks with hydroculture fertiliser.
-
Special features: The parlour palm grows rather slowly, stays compact and is particularly suitable for smaller rooms or offices.
Overwintering tips
In winter, give less nutrient solution and do not let the temperature drop below 12 °C. As a hydroculture plant, the parlour palm is an easy-care, long-lived houseplant whose fresh greenery creates a natural and pleasant indoor climate.
