Hydro – Sansevieria cylindrica “Tower”
Sansevieria cylindrica “Tower” is a particularly decorative, easy-care houseplant with upright, cylindrical, sturdy leaves. Its columnar growth gives it a modern, elegant appearance that is ideal for living spaces or offices. Originally from Africa, the plant is robust, undemanding and stores water in its leaves. In hydroculture, it thrives with adapted watering and needs very little care.
Care in hydroculture
Light:
A bright spot with plenty of indirect light is ideal. Partially shaded spots are also tolerated. Some morning or evening sun is fine; intense midday sun should be avoided where possible.
Temperature:
Ideally 18–27 °C; do not keep below 12 °C. Avoid cold draughts and large temperature fluctuations.
Humidity:
Normal room air is perfectly sufficient; there is no need to increase humidity specially.
Substrate:
Use hydroculture granules (e.g. expanded clay) for good aeration of the roots and an even water supply.
Watering:
Check the water level regularly and only top up once the water level indicator shows “Minimum”. Wait a few days before refilling so that the roots get enough oxygen. Be sure to avoid waterlogging, as permanently wet roots can lead to rot.
Feeding:
Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season from spring to autumn with special hydroculture fertiliser at the recommended dosage. In winter, feed considerably less or pause if there is no growth.
Special features:
The hydro Sansevieria cylindrica “Tower” is easy to care for, long-lived and ideal for beginners. Its distinctive, round, upright leaves make it a special eye-catcher. Thanks to its water-storing leaves, it copes well with short dry spells and needs very little water. It is particularly suited to modern interiors and to plant lovers looking for an uncomplicated houseplant.
Overwintering tips
In winter, top up less water and only refill once the water level indicator shows “Minimum”. Do not leave the roots permanently standing in water. Keep temperatures as constant as possible above 12 °C and avoid cold draughts. Feed only sparingly during the darker season. With its upright, columnar growth, the plant remains a decorative eye-catcher in winter too.
