Hydro – Sansevieria trifasciata “Canary”
Sansevieria trifasciata “Canary” is a decorative, easy-care houseplant with upright, sturdy leaves and striking yellowish-green tones. Its vivid leaf markings give living spaces and offices a fresh, elegant touch. This robust plant stores water in its leaves, is very undemanding and, with adapted watering, is ideally suited to hydroculture.
Care in hydroculture
Light:
A bright spot with plenty of indirect light is ideal. Partially shaded spots are also tolerated. Some morning or evening sun is fine; intense midday sun should be avoided.
Temperature:
Ideally 18–27 °C; if possible, do not keep below 12 °C. Avoid cold draughts and large temperature fluctuations.
Humidity:
Normal room air is perfectly sufficient. Increased humidity is not necessary.
Substrate:
Hydroculture granules (e.g. expanded clay) ensure good aeration of the roots and an even water supply.
Watering:
Check the water level regularly and only top up once the water level indicator shows “Minimum”. Wait a few days before refilling so that the roots get enough oxygen. Avoid permanently high water levels, as waterlogging can encourage root rot.
Feeding:
During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed every 4–6 weeks with special hydroculture fertiliser at the recommended dosage. In winter, feed considerably less or pause if there is no growth.
Special features:
The hydro Sansevieria trifasciata “Canary” is robust, long-lived and ideal for plant lovers looking for an uncomplicated houseplant. Its yellowish-green leaves add decorative splashes of colour and make it an attractive eye-catcher. Thanks to its water-storing leaves, it copes well with short dry spells and needs very little care.
Overwintering tips
In winter, reduce water use and only top up once the water level indicator shows “Minimum”. Do not leave the roots permanently standing in water. Keep temperatures as constant as possible above 12 °C and avoid cold draughts. Feed only sparingly during the darker season. The plant keeps its decorative leaf markings and remains an attractive eye-catcher in winter too.
