Schefflera arboricola Gold Capella, also known as the umbrella tree or dwarf umbrella tree, is a popular houseplant with striking green and yellow variegated leaves. It originally comes from Taiwan and Hainan and is particularly easy to care for – including in hydroculture. Its elegant growth habit and decorative foliage make it an attractive eye-catcher for homes and offices.
Care tips for Schefflera arboricola 'Gold Capella' in hydroculture:
Location:
Schefflera prefers a bright spot, but not full sun. A spot with indirect light, for example at an east- or west-facing window, is ideal. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light leads to sparse growth.
Watering:
In hydroculture, the water level in the container should be checked regularly. It is best to use demineralised water and keep the water level within the recommended range on the water level indicator. Be sure to avoid waterlogging – even in hydroculture.
Feeding:
Feed every two to four weeks during the growing season (spring to autumn) with a special hydroculture fertiliser. In winter, feeding every six to eight weeks is sufficient. Make sure the fertiliser is suitable for hydroculture systems and does not change the pH value too much.
Humidity:
Schefflera copes well with normal indoor air, but appreciates occasional misting of the leaves, especially in winter when the heating makes the air dry.
Temperature:
Temperatures between 18°C and 24°C are ideal. Avoid cool draughts and temperatures below 12°C, as these can cause leaf drop.
Repotting:
Repotting is needed less often in hydroculture. Only when the roots have heavily penetrated the container or the substrate is very dirty should it be changed. Use fresh expanded clay substrate and rinse the roots thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Pests:
In hydroculture, Schefflera is less susceptible to pests, but spider mites or scale insects can still appear in unfavourable conditions. Check the plant regularly and use an organic plant protection product if necessary.
Winter care:
During the winter months, the plant needs less water and no intensive feeding. A bright spot is still important – a grow light can help if necessary.
Cleaning the leaves:
Remove dust regularly with a soft, damp cloth. This supports photosynthesis and helps prevent pests.
