Hydro – Snake Plant Sansevieria Black Diamond
The snake plant Sansevieria Black Diamond is a decorative, easy-care houseplant with sturdy, upright, dark green leaves. The striking dark leaf colour and compact habit give it an elegant, modern look. This robust plant stores water in its leaves, is very undemanding and, with adapted watering, is very well suited to hydroculture.
Care in hydroculture
Light:
A bright spot with plenty of indirect light is ideal. Partially shaded spots are also tolerated well. Some morning or evening sun is fine; intense midday sun should be avoided.
Temperature:
Ideally 18–27 °C; try not to let it drop below 12 °C. Avoid cold drafts and strong temperature fluctuations.
Humidity:
Normal room air is perfectly sufficient. Increased humidity is not necessary.
Substrate:
Hydroculture granules (e.g. expanded clay) ensure good aeration of the roots and an even water supply.
Watering:
Check the water level regularly and only top up once the water level indicator is at minimum. Wait a few days before refilling so that the roots receive enough oxygen. Avoid permanently high water levels, as waterlogging can encourage root rot.
Fertilising:
During the growing season from spring to autumn, fertilise every 4–6 weeks with a special hydroculture fertiliser at the recommended dosage. In winter, fertilise much less or pause if there is no growth.
Special features:
The hydro Sansevieria Black Diamond is robust, long-lived and ideal for plant lovers looking for an uncomplicated houseplant. Its dark green, sturdy leaves add elegant accents in living spaces and offices. Thanks to its water-storing leaves, it tolerates short dry spells well, but is sensitive to permanently wet roots.
Overwintering tips
In winter, reduce water consumption and only refill once the water level indicator is at minimum. Do not leave the roots standing in water permanently. Keep temperatures as constant as possible above 12 °C and avoid cold drafts. Fertilise only sparingly during the low-light season. The plant keeps its dark, decorative leaf colour and remains an attractive eye-catcher in winter too.
