Hydro – Snake Plant Sansevieria kirkii
The snake plant Sansevieria kirkii is an attractive, robust houseplant with broad, slightly wavy leaves and a striking dark green to silvery-green pattern. The decorative leaves can have reddish-brown edges and give the plant an exotic look. Thanks to its undemanding nature and its ability to store water in its leaves, it is well suited to hydroculture.
Care in hydroculture
Light:
A bright spot with plenty of indirect light is ideal. Partially shaded spots are also tolerated. Some morning or evening sun is fine; avoid intense midday sun if possible.
Temperature:
Ideally 18–27 °C; try not to let it drop below 12 °C. Avoid cold drafts and strong temperature fluctuations.
Humidity:
Normal room air is perfectly sufficient. Increased humidity is not necessary.
Substrate:
Hydroculture granules (e.g. expanded clay) ensure good aeration of the roots and an even water supply.
Watering:
Check the water level regularly and only top up once the water level indicator is at “Minimum”. Wait a few days before refilling so that the roots receive enough oxygen. Avoid permanently high water levels, as waterlogging can encourage root rot.
Fertilising:
During the growing season from spring to autumn, fertilise every 4–6 weeks with a special hydroculture fertiliser at the recommended dosage. In winter, fertilise much less or pause if there is no growth.
Special features:
The hydro Sansevieria kirkii is easy to care for, long-lived and also suitable for plant lovers with little time. Its sturdy, decoratively marked leaves make it a special eye-catcher in living spaces and offices. As a succulent plant, it tolerates short dry spells well, but is sensitive to permanently wet roots.
Overwintering tips
In winter, reduce water consumption and only refill once the water level indicator is at “Minimum”. Do not leave the roots standing in water permanently. Keep temperatures as constant as possible above 12 °C and avoid cold drafts. Fertilise only sparingly during the low-light season. The plant keeps its decorative leaf markings and remains an attractive eye-catcher in winter too.
