Sansevieria zeylanica, also known as snake plant or mother-in-law's tongue, is a succulent that originally comes from West Africa. It was first discovered by European explorers in the 18th century and became popular as an exotic houseplant. Its easy-care nature and air-purifying abilities have helped make it a popular choice for interiors to this day. In recent years, growing Sansevieria zeylanica in hydroculture has become increasingly widespread. Hydroculture offers many advantages, such as improved water and nutrient uptake by the plant's roots and better air circulation.
Care tips for Sansevieria zeylanica in hydroculture:
Substrate and roots:
A substrate specially suited to hydroculture should be used. The plant needs a free-draining medium that efficiently drains away excess water and protects the roots from waterlogging.
Watering:
In hydroculture, it is important to water carefully. Only water when the water reservoir in the planter is almost empty and the top layer of the substrate is dry. Sansevieria zeylanica tolerates dryness better than waterlogging.
Feeding:
Due to the improved nutrient uptake in hydroculture, it is advisable to feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertiliser. The fertiliser should be diluted according to the instructions on the packaging. During the growing season, you can feed every few weeks.
Light:
Sansevieria zeylanica thrives best in bright, indirect light. The planter should be placed somewhere with sufficient light, but direct sunlight should be avoided.
Temperature and humidity:
This plant adapts well to different conditions, but prefers temperatures between 18°C and 24°C. High humidity is not required, and it copes well with normal indoor air conditions.
Repotting:
In hydroculture, sansevierias need to be repotted less often than in conventional soil. However, repotting every few years is advisable to renew the substrate and make room for root growth.
Pest control:
It is recommended to check the plant regularly for signs of pests such as spider mites or scale insects. In hydroculture, pests often have less chance of becoming established, but you should still look out for signs.
