History of the weeping fig Ficus benjamina Nitida
The Ficus benjamina Nitida, a variety of the classic weeping fig, originally comes from the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Australia. With its dense, glossy green foliage and elegant growth, it is one of the most popular houseplants. It is ideal for homes, offices and conservatories and contributes to a pleasant indoor climate.
Care in hydroculture
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light. Morning or evening sun is well tolerated, but intense midday sun should be avoided.
- Temperature: 18–28 °C is ideal. Temperatures below 12 °C should be avoided.
- Humidity: Medium to high. With dry heating air, the plant appreciates occasional misting of its leaves.
- Substrate: Hydroculture with expanded clay and a matching nursery pot including a water level indicator.
- Watering: Only top up when the water level indicator shows Minimum . Then fill up to the optimum mark . A permanently high water level should be avoided.
- Feeding: During the growing season, feed every 2–4 weeks with a special hydroculture fertiliser.
- Special features: The Ficus benjamina 'Nitida' is sensitive to frequent changes of position, draughts and sharp fluctuations in temperature. In such cases, it may temporarily drop leaves. After a period of acclimatisation, however, the plant usually reliably puts out new growth again.
Overwintering tips
During the winter months, the plant needs less water and fertiliser. A spot that is as bright as possible and temperatures above 12 °C help to prevent leaf loss. The water level should be checked regularly in the cold season too, as water consumption is significantly lower.
