Rhapis excelsa is a slow-growing palm and an excellent air purifier, breaking down pollutants and releasing water through evaporation. It originates from South-East Asia and, as a forest dweller, is very happy in shady spots, which is very unusual for a palm. With little sunlight, it grows correspondingly slowly and steadily. In the wild, it can reach a height of up to five metres in old age. Its slow growth explains its higher retail price. However, Rhapis can reach an enormous age of several hundred or even 1000 years. Occasional brown leaf tips are normal and characteristic of this genus.
