Aspidistra, also known as the cast iron plant, is a very undemanding houseplant. It is native to the forests from the Himalayas to China and Japan and, although it is called a palm in German and looks like one, it does not belong to the palm family but to the lily family (Liliaceae and Convallariaceae). It grows very slowly and produces a maximum of 2 – 4 lanceolate, deep green, glossy leaves up to 70cm long each year. Its undemanding nature is truly remarkable: it doesn't mind whether it is warm or cool, in a bright or shady spot – it thrives everywhere and lives for an exceptionally long time. Occasionally, in old age, it can even produce wonderful purple-red flowers.
