History of the Dischidia nummularia snail shell plant
Dischidia nummularia is an easy-care, exotic hanging plant from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. As an epiphyte, it grows on trees there. Its trademark is its small, thick, coin-like leaves that sit close together. Thanks to its delicate appearance, it is very popular as a houseplant and terrarium plant.Care as a houseplant:
Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; avoid direct sunlight.
Temperature: Ideally 20–26 °C, not below 18 °C in winter.
Humidity: High, at least 60 %; regular misting promotes healthy growth.
Substrate: Airy, free-draining substrate, e.g. a mix of sphagnum moss, orchid bark and perlite.
Watering: Water moderately and let the substrate dry out slightly between waterings; be sure to avoid waterlogging.
Feeding: During the growing season, every 4–6 weeks with a weakly dosed liquid houseplant fertiliser.
Special features: Its elegant trailing growth makes this plant ideal for hanging baskets or raised planters.
Care as a terrarium plant:
Light: Diffused light or grow lights that give off little heat are optimal.
Temperature: Evenly warm at 22–28 °C, at least 20 °C in winter.
Humidity: Very high, ideally 70–90 %; regular misting or a fogger is recommended.
Substrate: Loose mix of moss, bark pieces and perlite for good root aeration.
Watering: Keep evenly slightly moist without waterlogging; short drying phases are important.
Terrarium conditions: Dischidia nummularia grows particularly vigorously in a well-ventilated terrarium with stable warmth and high humidity.
Overwintering tips:
During the winter months, the Dischidia nummularia snail shell plant should not be kept colder than 18 °C as a houseplant and 20 °C in a terrarium. Watering can be reduced slightly without letting the substrate dry out completely. Continued high humidity is crucial to prevent leaf loss and stunted growth.
