History of the Dischidia snail shell plant
The Dischidia snail shell plant Snaily (snail plant), botanically known as Dischidia pectenoides, is a fascinating houseplant famous for its extraordinary hollow leaves. In their natural environment, these leaves provide shelter and a habitat for ants, which earned it the nickname 'snail shell plant'. It originally comes from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, where it grows as an epiphyte on trees. Today this unique plant is a popular choice for exotic houseplant collections, as it impresses with both its unusual appearance and its ease of care.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; direct sun should be avoided.
- Temperature: Ideally 20–26 °C, at least 18 °C in winter.
- Humidity: High, ideally over 60 %; occasional misting supports its well-being.
- Substrate: Free-draining substrate, e.g. a mix of sphagnum moss, orchid bark and perlite.
- Watering: Water moderately; let the substrate dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: Every 4–6 weeks with a weak liquid fertiliser for houseplants during the growing season.
- Special features: This houseplant prefers increased humidity and thrives particularly well in hanging baskets or on climbing supports.
Care as a terrarium plant:
- Light: Diffused light or grow lights are ideal for growth.
- Temperature: Tropical temperatures between 22–28 °C, at least 20 °C in winter.
- Humidity: High, ideally 70–90 %. A fogger or regular misting is helpful.
- Substrate: An airy mix of moss, bark pieces and perlite ensures ideal drainage.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist without waterlogging. The substrate should dry out slightly between waterings.
- Terrarium conditions: The Dischidia snail shell plant thrives superbly in a well-ventilated terrarium with high humidity and stable temperatures.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, the Dischidia snail shell plant needs a minimum temperature of 18 °C as a houseplant and 20 °C in a terrarium. Watering can be reduced slightly during this phase, but high humidity should still be maintained to keep the plant healthy.
