Rubber plant

The genus Ficus comprises more than 800 species. The white rubbery sap, ‘latex’, which seeps out when its rubber-like leaves are damaged, can be used to make rubber – hence the name rubber plant! For commercial latex production, however, the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) is used. It is planted as an ornamental plant along roads and in parks and gardens almost throughout the tropics. Thanks to its easy care, it is one of the most popular houseplants of all.
