History of the rubber plant Ficus elastica Abidjan
The rubber plant (Ficus elastica Abidjan) is a decorative variety of the classic Ficus elastica and originally comes from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. The variety Abidjan is characterised by its deep dark red to almost black, glossy leaves, which give it a particularly elegant appearance. Rubber plants used to be grown for rubber production; today they are very popular as robust, long-lived houseplants.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; partially shaded spots are well tolerated.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–25 °C; do not keep below 15 °C for long periods.
-
Humidity: Moderate; occasional misting promotes glossy leaves.
-
Substrate: Loose, well-draining substrate, e.g. potting soil with sand or perlite.
-
Watering: Water moderately; the top layer of soil should dry out between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
-
Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks with liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
-
Special features: An easy-care houseplant that perfectly complements modern living spaces with its dark, elegant leaves.
Overwintering tips:
Water more sparingly in winter and do not keep below 15 °C. The Ficus elastica Abidjan is a reliable, decorative houseplant that is ideal for beginners and collectors alike.
