History of the rubber plant Abidjan

The rubber plant Abidjan (Ficus elastica 'Abidjan') is a robust and popular houseplant with large, glossy leaves in deep dark green to burgundy. The rubber plant originally comes from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and was formerly used to produce natural rubber. Today it is a valued houseplant thanks to its easy-care nature and air-purifying properties.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to partially shaded spot; no direct midday sun.
  • Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.
  • Humidity: Moderate; occasional misting of the leaves promotes health.
  • Substrate: Loose, free-draining substrate, e.g. potting soil mixed with sand or perlite.
  • Watering: Water moderately; the substrate should dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
  • Feeding: Every 4 weeks with liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
  • Special features: This houseplant is very adaptable and, with good care, grows into an imposing eye-catcher.

Overwintering tips:
