Dieffenbachias are classic, easy-care houseplants and are valued for their beautiful foliage. They originally come from the tropical forests of the Amazon. They were named in honour of Joseph Dieffenbach, who was head gardener at the Botanical Garden in Vienna and lived from 1796 – 1863. Another English name is dumb cane. The name comes from the fact that the plant was used as a means of torture in the 17th century. Slaves in particular had to chew parts of the plant, after which the swelling of their mucous membranes and tongue left them unable to speak for a whole day. Caution: highly toxic! Do not eat!
