History of the Dieffenbachia Banana

Dieffenbachia Banana is a decorative tropical houseplant from the arum family (Araceae) and originally comes from the warm, humid regions of Central and South America. The variety delights with its large, elongated leaves and its strong, upright growth, quickly giving it a lush, tropical look. The Dieffenbachia Banana looks particularly impressive as a specimen plant and is suitable for living spaces as well as offices and larger interiors. Like most dieffenbachias, it prefers a warm spot with indirect light and good humidity. Pet owners should take care, however, as dieffenbachias contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to partial shade with indirect light. Avoid direct midday sun, as the large leaves can react sensitively to strong sunlight.
  • Temperature: Around 18–26 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C wherever possible.
  • Humidity: Increased humidity is preferred. Dry air from heating can lead to brown leaf tips.
  • Substrate: Use a loose, humus-rich and free-draining houseplant substrate. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
  • Watering: Water evenly and let the top layer of soil dry out slightly between waterings. Excess water should always be able to drain away.
  • Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed with a foliage plant fertiliser roughly every 2–4 weeks. Reduce or pause feeding in winter.
  • Special features: In good conditions, the Dieffenbachia Banana grows vigorously and develops an attractive, dense crown of leaves. The large leaves can be carefully dusted regularly so that they retain their decorative effect.
  • Important for pet owners: The Dieffenbachia Banana is toxic to cats and dogs. If nibbled, the calcium oxalate crystals it contains can cause severe irritation in the mouth and throat, drooling, difficulty swallowing and vomiting. The plant should also be kept out of the reach of children.

Overwintering tips:

The Dieffenbachia Banana can be grown warm as a houseplant all year round. In winter, it should be placed in the brightest possible spot and protected from cold draughts and dry heating air. Because there is less light, water more carefully and reduce feeding.
