History of the Dieffenbachia Green Magic
Dieffenbachia Green Magic is an attractive, easy-care houseplant from the arum family (Araceae). This variety delights with its large, elongated leaves in a rich dark green, which give the plant an elegant, tropical look. Dieffenbachias originally come from the tropical regions of Central and South America and feel particularly at home in warm temperatures and increased humidity. Green Magic grows upright and over time forms a beautiful, dense crown of leaves, which also makes it stand out superbly as a larger specimen plant. Pet owners should take care, however, as Dieffenbachias contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats, dogs and other pets.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partial shade with indirect light. Avoid direct midday sun, as the large leaves can react sensitively to strong sunlight.
- Temperature: Around 18–26 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C wherever possible.
- Humidity: Increased humidity is preferred. Normal room air is usually tolerated, but dry heating air can cause brown leaf tips.
- Substrate: Use a loose, humus-rich and free-draining houseplant substrate. The substrate should be able to retain moisture without being permanently wet.
- Watering: Water evenly and let the top layer of soil dry out slightly between waterings. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed about every 2–4 weeks with a foliage plant fertiliser. Reduce feeding in winter.
- Special features: In good conditions, Dieffenbachia Green Magic grows vigorously and can reach an impressive size over time. Dust on the large leaves can be removed carefully with a damp cloth.
- Important for pet owners: Dieffenbachia Green Magic is toxic to cats and dogs. If nibbled, the plant sap and the calcium oxalate crystals it contains can cause severe irritation of the mouth and throat, drooling, difficulty swallowing and vomiting. The plant should also be kept out of the reach of children.
Overwintering tips:
Dieffenbachia Green Magic can be grown warm as a houseplant all year round. In winter it should be kept as bright as possible and protected from cold draughts and dry heating air. Because there is less light, water more carefully and reduce feeding.
