History of the Dieffenbachia seguine Marobe
Dieffenbachia seguine 'Marobe' is a decorative tropical houseplant from the arum family (Araceae) and originally comes from the warm, humid regions of Central and South America. This variety delights with its large, elongated leaves, whose attractive green colouring creates an elegant, lush effect. Dieffenbachias grow upright and, in good conditions, develop a strong, dense crown of leaves, making them excellent as solitary plants. It prefers warm temperatures, indirect light and consistently increased humidity. Pet owners should take care, however, as dieffenbachias contain calcium oxalate crystals and are toxic to cats and dogs.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to semi-shaded with indirect light. Avoid direct midday sun, as the large leaves can be sensitive to intense sunlight.
- Temperature: Around 18–26 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C wherever possible.
- Humidity: Increased humidity is preferred. Dry air from heating can lead to brown leaf tips.
- Substrate: Use a loose, humus-rich and free-draining houseplant substrate. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Watering: Water evenly and let the top layer of soil dry out slightly between waterings. Excess water should always be able to drain away.
- Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed with a foliage plant fertiliser roughly every 2–4 weeks. Reduce or pause feeding in winter.
- Special features: In good conditions, Dieffenbachia seguine 'Marobe' grows vigorously and can become an impressive houseplant over time. Regularly remove dust from the large leaves so they keep their decorative effect.
- Important for pet owners: Dieffenbachia seguine 'Marobe' is toxic to cats and dogs. If chewed, the plant sap and calcium oxalate crystals can cause severe irritation of the mouth and throat, drooling, difficulty swallowing and vomiting.
Overwintering tips:
Dieffenbachia seguine 'Marobe' can be grown warm as a houseplant all year round. In winter, it should be kept as bright as possible and protected from cold draughts. Because there is less light, water less and reduce feeding.
