The Araucaria cunninghamii, also known as hoop pine, originally comes from Australia and New Guinea. In its homeland it becomes a mighty tree, whereas as a bonsai in an S-shape it has been trained into an elegant and decorative houseplant. With its even, curved growth and soft, needle-like leaves, it brings a piece of nature into any home.
Care as a houseplant:
Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; no direct midday sun.
Temperature: 16–22 °C is ideal; do not keep below 10 °C.
Humidity: Moderate to high; mist occasionally, especially in winter when the heating is on.
Substrate: Free-draining, humus-rich, slightly sandy soil.
Watering: Keep evenly moist but avoid waterlogging; let the soil dry out slightly between waterings.
Feeding: Every 4 weeks with a mild liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
Special features: This houseplant grows slowly and is ideal for lovers of decorative bonsai shapes.
Overwintering tips:
