History of the bird's nest fern Asplenium nidus

The bird's nest fern (Asplenium nidus) is an elegant, tropical houseplant that delights with its large, glossy, wavy leaves. The fresh, light to rich green leaves grow in a rosette from the centre of the plant and are reminiscent of a bird's nest. Asplenium nidus originally comes from the tropical rainforests of Asia, Australia and Polynesia, where it grows epiphytically on trees and loves the high humidity of the forests. As a houseplant, its lush foliage creates a natural, calming ambience.

Care as a houseplant:

• Light: Bright to partially shaded position with plenty of indirect light; avoid direct sun.

• Temperature: 18–26 °C is ideal; temperatures below 15 °C should be avoided.

• Humidity: High; increased humidity promotes healthy growth and beautiful leaves.

• Substrate: Loose, humus-rich and free-draining fern substrate or foliage plant soil.

• Watering: Keep evenly slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Use low-lime water if possible.

• Feeding: During the growing season, every 4 weeks with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for foliage plants.

• Special features: The decorative, wavy leaves add tropical flair and improve the indoor climate.

Overwintering tips:
