History of the crocodile fern

The crocodile fern Microsorum musifolium 'Crocodyllus' is an unusual fern variety from Southeast Asia and belongs to the polypody family (Polypodiaceae). It owes its name to the striking texture of its leaves, whose surface is reminiscent of crocodile skin. The strong, elongated fronds are dark green, slightly glossy and have a striking net-like pattern, making the plant a real eye-catcher. Like many ferns, the crocodile fern loves high humidity and is particularly well suited to bathrooms, terrariums or other more humid areas of the home. It is also known as a pet-friendly plant and is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, which makes it a lovely choice for households with animals too.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to partial shade with indirect light. Avoid direct midday sun, as the delicate fronds can easily scorch.
  • Temperature: Around 18–25 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid temperatures below 15 °C if possible.
  • Humidity: High humidity is preferred. The crocodile fern feels particularly at home in humid rooms or near a humidifier.
  • Substrate: Use a loose, humus-rich and free-draining substrate. The substrate should be able to retain moisture without becoming waterlogged.
  • Watering: Keep evenly moist and do not let the root ball dry out. Ideally water with low-lime water.
  • Feeding: During the growing season, feed roughly every 4 weeks with a weakly dosed foliage plant or fern fertiliser.
  • Special features: The characteristic leaf texture makes this fern particularly decorative. Old or damaged fronds can be removed as needed. Consistently high humidity supports the development of beautiful new leaves.
  • Important for pet owners: The crocodile fern is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs and is therefore generally well suited to households with pets.

Overwintering tips:

The crocodile fern can be grown warm as a houseplant all year round. In winter, it should still be kept bright but protected from direct heating air. Keep the substrate slightly moist and make sure the humidity does not drop too much.
