History of the croton Codiaeum Mammi
The croton Codiaeum Mammi belongs to the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae) and is a particularly colourful houseplant. The variety is characterised by its narrow, twisted leaves, which can show various shades of green, yellow, orange and red. The brighter the spot, the more intense the attractive leaf colouring becomes. Its compact growth and unusual foliage make it a real eye-catcher in bright living spaces.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to very bright spot without strong midday sun. Plenty of light encourages intense leaf colouring.
- Temperature: 18–28 °C is optimal; avoid temperatures below 15 °C.
- Humidity: Prefers high humidity of around 60–80 %. Dry heating air can lead to leaf drop.
- Substrate: Loose, humus-rich and free-draining potting soil, ideally slightly acidic.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist but avoid waterlogging. Only water once the top layer of substrate has dried out slightly. Low-lime water is preferred.
- Feeding: From spring to autumn, feed every 2–4 weeks with a fertiliser for foliage plants.
- Special features: The characteristically twisted leaves and strong colouring make 'Mammi' particularly decorative. Frequent moving or temperature fluctuations can trigger leaf drop.
- Important for pet owners: The croton is toxic. The milky sap can irritate the skin and mucous membranes and should not be swallowed. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
Overwintering tips:
Water less, but do not let the root ball dry out completely. Continue to keep as bright and warm as possible and do not let temperatures drop below 15 °C. Feeding can be paused during the low-light winter months.
