Dracaena compacta is a species of the genus Dracaena from the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). It is also known as the dragon tree. It originally comes from East Africa, more precisely from the areas around Mozambique, Madagascar and Mauritius. Historically, Dracaena compacta was valued not only for its aesthetic features but also for its supposed air-purifying properties. In fact, the 1989 NASA study shows that Dracaena species are effectively able to remove pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene from the air, which has contributed to their popularity as houseplants.
Important care tips for Dracaena Compacta as a houseplant:
• The ideal location for Dracaena compacta is bright, but it should avoid direct sunlight. It adapts well to the light conditions in most homes, which makes it the ideal houseplant.
• It prefers temperatures between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius. It is important to protect it from draughts and extreme temperature fluctuations.
• Dracaena compacta does not tolerate waterlogging, so it is important to water it only moderately. Let the top layer of soil dry out between waterings.
• Houseplants such as Dracaena compacta benefit from high humidity. Mist the leaves regularly with low-lime water to increase humidity.
• As a houseplant, Dracaena compacta has relatively low nutrient requirements. Feed it about every two weeks from spring to autumn with a standard liquid fertiliser for green houseplants. In winter, feeding once a month is sufficient.
• Dracaena compacta should only be repotted when the roots fill the entire pot. Spring is a good time for repotting.
• Watch out for pests and diseases. Yellow leaves can be a sign of overwatering, while brown tips can indicate that the humidity is too low.
Caring for this houseplant is therefore not particularly complicated, and with a little attention Dracaena compacta can become a beautiful green highlight in your home.
