The genus Dracaena is extremely diverse and historically fascinating. It comprises more than 100 species, including Hawaiian, and is found all over the world. Most species originally come from Africa, some also from South Asia and Central America. In terms of cultural history, Dracaenas have been used as decorative houseplants for centuries. They were valued in ancient cultures such as the Egyptians and Romans, as well as in Far Eastern cultures such as the Chinese and Japanese, for their impressive appearance and supposed healing properties.

Important care tips for Dracaena:

  • Light: Dracaenas prefer bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves.

  • Temperature: Dracaenas thrive in warm conditions with temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. They do not tolerate cold and should be protected from draughts.

  • Water: As houseplants, Dracaenas should not be watered too often. Let the surface of the soil dry out between waterings. They prefer a little dryness rather than too much water, which can lead to root rot.

  • Humidity: Dracaenas thrive in medium to high humidity. If the air in your home is particularly dry, you can increase the humidity around the plant by misting the foliage or using a humidifier.

  • Fertiliser: Feed your Dracaena every two weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced houseplant fertiliser.

  • Repotting: Young plants can be repotted every year. Older plants only need this every 2-3 years or when the roots fill the pot.

  • Pruning: Dracaenas tolerate pruning very well. You can prune them to control their size or give them a desired shape.
