History of the Dracaena Janet Craig
Dracaena Janet Craig is a particularly popular and easy-care houseplant from the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). It originally comes from the tropical regions of Africa and belongs to the species Dracaena fragrans. With its strong, dark green leaves and upright, elegant growth, it brings rich greenery to homes, offices and business premises all year round. The Janet Craig variety is known for its robustness and copes well with somewhat less light, which makes it an excellent choice for beginners. At the same time, its large leaf mass contributes to a pleasant indoor climate. However, it is not suitable for pets, as dracaenas can contain components that are toxic to cats and dogs and can cause health problems, particularly if eaten.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partial shade, ideally with indirect light. Darker spots are also tolerated, but the plant grows more slowly there.
- Temperature: Around 18–25 °C all year round is ideal. Temperatures below 15 °C should be avoided where possible.
- Humidity: Normal room air is well tolerated. However, slightly higher humidity encourages strong, healthy growth.
- Substrate: Use a loose, free-draining houseplant substrate. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
- Watering: Water moderately and let the top layer of soil dry out slightly between waterings. Excess water should be able to drain away.
- Feeding: During the growing season from spring to autumn, feed roughly every 2–4 weeks with a suitable foliage plant fertiliser. Feed considerably less in winter.
- Special features: Dracaena Janet Craig is extremely robust and forgives minor care mistakes. Brown leaf tips can appear if the air is too dry, watering is irregular or the salt concentration in the substrate is high.
- Important for pet owners: Dracaena Janet Craig is not suitable for cats and dogs. Nibbling or eating it can cause vomiting, drooling and digestive problems, among other things.
Overwintering tips:
Dracaena Janet Craig can easily be grown as a houseplant all year round. In winter it should be kept as bright as possible, still warm, and watered more carefully. Waterlogging must be avoided in particular during the darker months.
