History of the Dracaena Lemon Lime

Dracaena Lemon Lime, botanically Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime', is a particularly attractive variety of the popular dragon tree and originally comes from the tropical regions of Africa. It is characterised by its long, lanceolate leaves with strong green, pale yellow and lime-green stripes, which give the plant its fresh name. It grows upright and elegantly and over time develops an attractive, palm-like character. Lemon Lime is considered very easy to care for and adaptable, and also tolerates less bright positions, although its striking leaf colouring shows to best effect in better indirect light. However, caution is advised in households with animals: Dracaena species contain saponins and can be toxic to cats and dogs.

Care as a houseplant:

  • Light: Bright to partial shade with indirect light. Too little light can weaken the intense lemon-lime colouring. Direct midday sun should be avoided.
  • Temperature: Around 18–25 °C all year round is ideal. Avoid cold draughts and temperatures below about 15 °C.
  • Humidity: Normal indoor air is usually well tolerated. However, slightly higher humidity supports strong and healthy growth.
  • Substrate: Use a loose, humus-rich and free-draining houseplant substrate. Be sure to avoid waterlogging.
  • Watering: Only water once the top layer of soil has dried out slightly. Then water thoroughly and let excess water drain away. Water less in winter.
  • Feeding: From spring to autumn, feed about every 3–4 weeks with a foliage plant fertiliser. During the dark winter months, feed only very sparingly or not at all.
  • Special features: Dracaena Lemon Lime is particularly robust and ideal for beginners. If the air is too dry or watering is irregular, brown leaf tips can develop. Water containing lime or fluoride can also make leaf tips more susceptible.
  • Important for pet owners: Dracaena Lemon Lime is not suitable for cats and dogs. If eaten, the saponins it contains can cause drooling, vomiting, loss of appetite and other gastrointestinal problems, among other things.

Overwintering tips:

Dracaena Lemon Lime can easily be grown as a houseplant all year round. In winter it should be kept as bright and warm as possible, but at the same time protected from cold draughts and direct heating air. As the plant needs less water in the darker season, the substrate should be allowed to dry out more between waterings.
