Dracaena marginata, also known as the dragon tree, is a tropical houseplant originally from Madagascar. It belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae). The genus Dracaena comprises around 40 species, many of which are valued as decorative houseplants. Dracaena marginata is characterised by its thick, woody stems and long, narrow green leaves with red or purple edges, which give it its striking, dragon-like appearance. This is also where its common name, dragon tree, comes from.
Important care tips for Dracaena marginata (branched) as a houseplant:
Light: Dracaena marginata prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves. A spot near a north- or east-facing window would be ideal.
Water: The plant needs moderate watering. It is fairly drought-tolerant, and it is better to water too little than too much. Watering should be reduced in winter.
Temperature: As a tropical plant, Dracaena marginata prefers warm temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. Draughts and sudden temperature fluctuations should be avoided.
Humidity: It likes high humidity, so it can help to mist the plant regularly with water, especially during the dry winter months.
Feeding: During the growing season, from spring to autumn, Dracaena marginata should be fed roughly every two weeks with a liquid houseplant fertiliser.
Repotting: Repotting is only necessary every few years, when the plant outgrows its pot. It is best to do this in spring.
Pest control: Check your houseplant regularly for signs of pests such as aphids or spider mites. If infested, a mild soap solution can help.
