Here is some information about separating fleece as drainage and how to use it:

What is a separating fleece: Separating fleece is a textile material that is permeable to water and air. It is often made from polypropylene or other synthetic fibres. The fleece has a loose structure that lets water through easily while preventing the substrate from getting into the drainage layer.

How separating fleece works as drainage:

  1. Preventing waterlogging: Separating fleece prevents water from building up at the bottom of the flower pot by separating the substrate from the drainage layer. This is important to avoid root rot, which can be caused by excessive moisture.

  2. Air circulation: The material allows good ventilation of the root zone, which is crucial for root growth and the overall health of the plant.

Using separating fleece when repotting:

  1. Preparing the pot: First place a 2cm layer of expanded clay at the bottom of the new flower pot. Then put the separating fleece on top. Make sure the fleece covers the bottom evenly and reaches the edges.

  2. Adding substrate: Add the substrate of your choice on top of the separating fleece. Make sure there is enough space for your plant's roots.

  3. Repotting the plant: Carefully remove the plant from its old pot and place it in the new pot on the prepared substrate.

  4. Filling the pot: Fill the pot with more substrate until the roots are covered. Press the substrate down lightly to make sure the plant stands firmly.

  5. Watering: Water the plant thoroughly so that the substrate can settle. The separating fleece helps drain off excess water.
