History of the Lipstick Plant Aeschynanthus marmoratus
The lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus marmoratus) is an extraordinary houseplant from the tropical regions of South-East Asia. It belongs to the gesneriad family and grows epiphytically on trees in its native habitat. Particularly striking are its elongated, marbled leaves with dark markings on the upper side and a purple underside. It owes its name 'lipstick plant' to its tubular flowers, which look like a twisted-up lipstick.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; no direct midday sun.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.
-
Humidity: High; regular misting or a bright spot in the bathroom is ideal.
-
Substrate: Loose, free-draining substrate with some bark or a special orchid compost mix.
-
Watering: Water moderately; the substrate should dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
-
Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks with liquid fertiliser during the growing phase.
-
Special features: This houseplant is excellent for hanging baskets, as its shoots trail decoratively.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, keep it a little cooler (approx. 16–18 °C) and water less. A slight rest period encourages flowering the following year. The Lipstick Plant Aeschynanthus marmoratus is a decorative houseplant that delights with its extraordinary leaf pattern and its special flowers.
