History of the Lipstick Plant Aeschynanthus Mona Lisa
Aeschynanthus Mona Lisa, also known as the “lipstick plant”, belongs to the gesneriad family (Gesneriaceae) and comes from the tropical rainforests of Asia. It owes its name to its bright red, tubular flowers, which emerge from dark calyces and resemble a lipstick twisted out of its case. This exotic houseplant is a popular trailing plant that can flower all year round with the right care.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; direct sun only in the morning or evening.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; below 15 °C it may stop growing.
- Humidity: Medium to high (50–70 %); occasional misting is helpful.
- Substrate: Loose, free-draining substrate; a mix of potting soil, orchid substrate and perlite is ideal.
- Watering: Water moderately, only once the top layer of soil is dry; avoid waterlogging.
- Feeding: During the growing season, every 2–4 weeks with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for flowering plants.
- Special features: This houseplant prefers to be slightly pot-bound – this encourages flowering.
Care as a terrarium plant:
- Light: Bright, indirect light or artificial lighting in the terrarium.
- Temperature: 22–28 °C during the day, not below 18 °C at night.
- Humidity: High (60–80 %); regular misting or high background humidity encourages growth.
- Substrate: Well-aerated, loose substrate that retains moisture but does not stay too wet.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist, but no waterlogging.
- Terrarium conditions: Perfect for tropical rainforest terrariums with sufficient ventilation.
Overwintering tips
The temperature should not drop below 15 °C, and watering can be reduced slightly in winter. High humidity remains important, however. This easy-care houseplant is ideal for hanging baskets or as decorative greenery in tropical terrariums.
