History of the Lipstick Plant – Aeschynanthus Twister
The lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus Twister) is an extraordinary houseplant from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. It owes its name to its tubular, bright red flowers, which emerge from the calyx like lipstick twisted out of its case. The Twister variety is particularly eye-catching thanks to its strongly twisted, glossy green leaves, which give it a playful, curly appearance.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright spot with indirect light; no direct midday sun.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; do not keep below 15 °C.
-
Humidity: Medium to high; occasional misting promotes healthy growth.
-
Substrate: Loose, free-draining substrate with drainage (e.g. soil with perlite or bark).
-
Watering: Water moderately; the top layer of soil may dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
-
Feeding: Every 2–4 weeks with liquid fertiliser during the growing and flowering season.
-
Special features: This houseplant is ideal as a hanging plant and, with good care, flowers regularly.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, keep it somewhat cooler (approx. 16–18 °C) and water more sparingly. A short rest period promotes flowering the following year. The Aeschynanthus Twister is a decorative houseplant that is a real eye-catcher with its twisted leaves and bright flowers. 🌿
