History of Maranta leuconeura Tricolor
Maranta leuconeura Tricolor, also known as the “prayer plant”, comes from the tropical rainforests of South America and belongs to the arrowroot family (Marantaceae). It is particularly popular among houseplant lovers because of its striking leaf markings: dark green leaves with red veins and light green patches give it an extraordinary look. Its leaves move depending on the time of day – at night they fold upwards, which has earned it the name “prayer plant”.
Care as a houseplant:
- Light: Bright to partially shaded spot without direct sun.
- Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; it should not drop below 15 °C.
- Humidity: High (60–80 %); regular misting or a humidifier helps.
- Substrate: Loose, humus-rich substrate with good drainage, e.g. a mix of potting soil, coconut fibre and perlite.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist but avoid waterlogging; low-lime water is preferable.
- Feeding: From spring to autumn, every 2–4 weeks with a weak dose of liquid fertiliser.
- Special features: This houseplant is sensitive to dry air from heating – high humidity is crucial for its well-being.
Care as a terrarium plant:
- Light: Bright, indirect light or artificial lighting in the terrarium.
- Temperature: 22–28 °C during the day, not below 18 °C at night.
- Humidity: Very high (70–90 %); perfect for humid terrariums.
- Substrate: Loose, well-aerated terrarium substrate with high moisture retention.
- Watering: Keep evenly moist, but do not allow waterlogging.
- Terrarium conditions: Particularly well suited to rainforest terrariums with high humidity.
Overwintering tips:
The temperature should not drop below 15 °C. During the heating season, make sure there is sufficient humidity to avoid brown leaf edges. This easy-care houseplant is perfect for anyone who wants to bring a tropical flair into their home or terrarium.
