History of the Rhipsalis Red Coral
The Rhipsalis Red Coral belongs to the genus Rhipsalis, also known as coral cacti, and originally comes from the tropical rainforests of South America. Unlike most cacti, it grows epiphytically on trees in the shade of the forest. The variety Red Coral stands out for its fine, coral-like shoots, which turn reddish in plenty of light. It is regarded as a decorative and modern houseplant with exotic charm.
Care as a houseplant:
-
Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; direct sun only with care.
-
Temperature: Ideally 18–26 °C; do not keep below 12 °C.
-
Humidity: Medium to high; regular misting promotes healthy growth.
-
Substrate: Loose, free-draining substrate, e.g. cactus compost mixed with some bark or perlite.
-
Watering: Water moderately; let the substrate dry out slightly and avoid waterlogging.
-
Feeding: Every 4 weeks during the growing season with cactus fertiliser.
-
Special features: With good care, this houseplant shows an attractive red colouring and is perfect for hanging baskets.
Overwintering tips:
In winter, keep cooler (12–15 °C) and water more sparingly. The Rhipsalis Red Coral is an unusual houseplant that brings a tropical flair into your home.
