History of the metallic palm Chamaedorea
The metallic palm, usually known by its botanical name Chamaedorea metallica, is an unusual and elegant indoor palm that stands out above all for its dark green leaves with a metallic sheen. The individual leaves are broad and deeply notched and have a characteristic, almost glossy metallic surface. The species originally comes from the tropical regions of Mexico, where it grows in the shady understorey of humid forests. Thanks to its comparatively compact growth habit, it is ideal for living spaces and also copes well with less direct sun.
Care as a houseplant:
• Light: Bright to partially shaded spot with indirect light. Somewhat less bright spots are also well tolerated. Avoid direct midday sun, as the leaves can be sensitive to it.
• Temperature: 18–27 °C is optimal; avoid temperatures below 15 °C where possible.
• Humidity: Medium to high; increased humidity supports healthy growth and prevents dry leaf tips.
• Substrate: Loose, humus-rich and free-draining houseplant substrate. Good drainage is important so that excess water can drain away.
• Watering: Keep evenly slightly moist, but let the surface of the substrate dry out a little between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.
• Feeding: During the growing season, feed roughly every 3–4 weeks with a weakly dosed liquid fertiliser for foliage plants or palms.
• Special features: The dark green leaves with their metallic sheen make this Chamaedorea a particularly decorative and unusual palm. It grows rather slowly and stays compact compared with many other palms.
• Important for pet owners: Chamaedorea species are considered pet-friendly houseplants and are a good choice, particularly for households with cats and dogs.
Overwintering tips:
Water a little less in winter and keep in a bright to partially shaded spot. Temperatures should stay as constantly as possible above 15 °C. Avoid cold draughts and dry heating air. If the indoor air is dry, occasionally raising the humidity can help.
