History of the Philodendron Imperial Red

Philodendron Imperial Red is an elegant and popular houseplant that delights with its impressive leaf colouring and compact growth. New leaves emerge in strong red to copper tones and turn a deep dark green as they mature. This attractive colour change gives the plant a special dynamism all year round. Unlike many other philodendrons, the Imperial Red does not climb but forms a compact, upright rosette. Philodendrons originally come from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, where they thrive in warm, humid regions.

Care as a houseplant:

• Light: Bright to partially shaded spot with plenty of indirect light; avoid direct midday sun.

• Temperature: Ideally 18–27 °C; temperatures below 16 °C should be avoided.

• Humidity: Medium to high; increased humidity supports healthy growth and intense leaf colours.

• Substrate: Loose, airy and free-draining substrate, e.g. a mix of potting soil, bark, perlite and coconut fibre.

• Watering: Water moderately; let the substrate dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogging.

• Feeding: During the growing season, feed every 2–4 weeks with a liquid fertiliser for foliage plants.

• Special features: The red new growth and compact habit make this plant an attractive eye-catcher for living spaces and offices.

Overwintering tips:

In winter, water a little less and continue to keep it in a bright, warm spot. Temperatures should stay as constantly as possible above 16 °C. Avoid draughts and cold spots.
