History of the Philodendron McDowell
Philodendron McDowell is an impressive hybrid plant, valued for its large, heart-shaped leaves and its vigorous growth. The plant was created by crossing Philodendron gloriosum and Philodendron pastazanum and combines the best characteristics of both species. The velvety to slightly glossy, deep green leaves can reach a considerable size and are traversed by striking, light-coloured veins. Thanks to its creeping growth and impressive leaf development, Philodendron McDowell is one of the most popular collector's plants among aroid lovers.
Care as a houseplant:
• Light: Bright spot with plenty of indirect light; avoid direct sun.
• Temperature: Ideally 18–28 °C; temperatures below 16 °C should be avoided.
• Humidity: High; 60–80 % is ideal. Increased humidity promotes large, healthy leaves.
• Substrate: Loose, airy and free-draining aroid substrate, e.g. a mix of bark, perlite, coconut fibre and high-quality potting soil.
• Watering: Keep the substrate evenly slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. The top layer of substrate may dry out slightly between waterings.
• Feeding: During the growing season, feed every 2–4 weeks with a liquid fertiliser for foliage plants or aroids.
• Special features: As a creeping philodendron, the plant develops its largest leaves in elongated planters that give the rhizome enough room to spread.
Overwintering tips:
Water a little less in winter and continue to keep it warm and bright. Temperatures should remain as constant as possible above 18 °C. Avoid draughts and cold locations.
